About our Department

The Department of Pathology at the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine was established in 1953 and has been dedicated to the mission of making important contributions to patient care, education, and research in the specialty of laboratory medicine ever since. Through excellence in professional and technical performance the department is able to bring about innovative improvements and support new approaches to a variety of service and educational programs, as well as open new frontiers to research and development. The department is responsible for performing and overseeing clinical laboratory testing at the five major hospitals located within the Medical Center Complex (University of Miami Hospital, University of Miami Hospital and Clinics/ Sylvester Cancer Center, Anne Bates Leach Eye Hospital, Veterans Administration Medical Center, and Jackson Memorial Hospital) as well as local, national, and international practices. The rapidly increasing department employs over 200 full-time and part-time staff, as well as over 50 full-time and voluntary faculty members.

The department provides clinical care through our anatomical, clinical, and veterinary pathology services including UHealth Pathology, an independently licensed and CLIA certified reference laboratory which provides esoteric laboratory and pathology consultative services.
