The Renal Biopsy kit

  • The Renal Biopsy Kit
    • one vial with formalin for light microscopy analysis,
    • one vial with Michel’s transport medium for immunofluorescence studies,
    • one vial with glutareldheyde for ultrastructural analysis,
    • one requisition form (for patient’s demographic, billing information, referring physician information with contact)
    • one clinical information form (relevant clinical information for renal pathology interpretation)
    • one blade, wooden sticks and wax

Kidney biopsy work-up includes:

  • Histologic analysis on formalin fixed-paraffin embedded tissue by light microscopy: HE, PAS, trichrome, silver, elastin, congo red
  • Immunologic disease panel: immunofluorescence studies with antibodies against IgG, IgA, IgM, c3 and fibrinogen
  • Alport panel: immunofluorescence studies with antibodies against collagen Type IV alpha 1 and 5 chains to diagnose X linked Alport disease.
  • amyloid panel (amyloid p component, kappa and lambda, AA)

  • Electron microscopy
  • Immunohistochemistry: transplant panel (C4d, SV40, CMV), amyloid panel (amyloid p component, kappa and lambda, AA), others as appropriate on a case to case basis
  • Clinico-pathologic discussion of the renal biopsy findings with referring nephrologist or rheumatologist for assistance in making appropriate therapeutic decisions.
