Description: The molecular genetic pathology fellowship is an ACGME accredited one-year clinical fellowship designed to train pathologists or clinical medical geneticists for a career in molecular genetic pathology. Fellows rotate through several clinics and laboratory sites at Jackson Memorial Hospital/Jackson Health System and the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine, including the Sylvester Cancer Center, John P. Hussman Institute for Human Genomics (HIHG), the UM Biomedical Nanoscience Institute and others. Core rotations include benign and malignant hematology/hematopathology, solid tumors, vascular biology and hemostasis, infectious diseases, cytogenetics, medical genetics, laboratory management and compliance, laboratory informatics, clinical ethics, forensics, HLA typing. Fellows will rotate throughout the year through a diverse array of centers of clinical practice (e.g. inherited cancers clinic, etc.) that interface with the laboratory aspects of molecular genetic pathology. As training progresses, fellows will participate in laboratory test development and translational research and will assume progressively more responsibility for interactions with clinicians and other pathologists and test interpretation. The fellow will gain hands on experience in the use and interpretation of Next Generation Sequencing approaches to cancer diagnostics. Opportunities to engage in clinical research and present at a national meeting are encouraged.
