Observership Program

The University of Miami Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine offers interested US and International physicians and scientists the opportunity to spend up to 3 months in an Observership Program designed to allow visitors to shadow our faculty in various academic departmental activities, including daily signouts, educational conferences, and collaborative non-clinical research.

Application Process

To be considered for the program, applicants must:

  • Obtain written approval from a sponsoring Pathologist who has agreed to serve as host and mentor during the observership period. To obtain approval, applicants must email the specific pathologist and request a sponsorship. Make sure to include the dates of the observership period for which you are applying.
  • Possess strong English-language skills.
  • Be responsible for obtaining your own Visa and living accommodations.
  • Obtain a letter of reference from your current employer or academic institution.
  • Submit completed application with all required documentation and application fee.

Once ALL documents have been received and reviewed, an email communication will be sent with notification of the final decision regarding admission to the Observership Program.

  • Recent photograph
  • Copy of Passport
  • Copy of Visa
  • Proof of immunization
  • Certified copy of medical school diploma
  • Observer Application Form
  • Completed HIPAA form
  • Obtain a letter of reference from current employer.
  • Completed Observer Information Form
  • Completed Attachment 7 Form

Application Fee: There is a $150.00 (USD) application fee which is non-refundable. A certified check or money order payable to the University of Miami – Department of Pathology needs to accompany the application. *Cash, personal checks, or credit cards will not be accepted. *

Tuition: There is a $500 (USD) per month fee for the rotation, not to exceed a (3) month period. Payment is expected on the first day of Observership in the form of Certified Check or Money order, payable to University of Miami – Department. of Pathology. Cash, personal checks or credit cards will not be accepted.

Cancellation Policy: Once your application has been accepted and confirmed via e-mail, you are expected to complete the rotation. No refunds will be granted after (3) days of a started rotation and application fee remains non-refundable.

Termination Policy: The University of Miami – Department of Pathology reserves the right to terminate an Observer’s rotation at any time in the event that the Observer’s performance jeopardizes a patient’s well-being or is unable to achieve the objectives of the educational experience. If terminated, a pro-rated fee will be refunded to the Observer for the time remaining if it exceeds a time period of more than (2) weeks, however, the $150.00 application fee will remain non-refundable.

Absences: All absences need to be reported to the Observership Program Coordinator. Excused absences are limited to (2) days per month rotation. Any additional days needed would require an approval from Program Coordinator and Supervising Physician. Unexcused absences may result in termination of the rotation and inability to obtain a certificate of completion.

Certificate: At the end of a completed rotation, the observer will receive a certificate acknowledging participation and length of rotation at the University of Miami – Department of Pathology.

Acceptance of an individual to the Observership Program does not constitute a commitment by the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine or the Department of Pathology to interview or accept the individual for residency training in the Department of Pathology or any residency or fellowship program at the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine.
