Transplantation Pathology

Transplantation Pathology is a vital component of the transplant program at the University of Miami Medical School. This section processes and interprets biopsied material from transplanted organs, as well as biopsies from native tissue of patients being considered for or having undergone transplantation. Transplantation Pathology is a specialized referral division handling allograft biopsies from renal, liver, gastrointestinal, pancreas, heart, lung, and abdominal wall transplants from UM and outside institutions. There are highly competent technical support services and specialized methodologies including light microscopy (LM), immunofluorescence (IF), immunohistochemistry (IHC) and transmission electron microscopy (EM). Test results and diagnoses are provided quickly, usually within 24 hours based on histology and immunohistology. The final report with EM is provided shortly thereafter.

For referral cases, if requested, digital LM, IF or EM images, microscopic slides or EM prints of the cases can be provided to the referring pathologist or clinician. We also provide consultation of digital images sent to our office. Dr. Ruiz oversees the service and is nationally recognized in renal pathology, transplantation pathology and immunopathology.

There is a team of pathologists specialized in transplantation pathology at the Universityof Miami. All of them are certified by the American Board of Pathology in Anatomic and/or Clinical Pathology.
