Diagnostic Molecular Pathology Laboratory (DMPL)
The Diagnostic Molecular Pathology Laboratory at the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine Department of Pathology offers state of the art molecular testing for leukemia, lymphoma, solid tumors, and molecular markers associated with disease. Our test repertoire is based on the latest research brought into the clinical diagnostic arena. They provide initial diagnostic information and detection of residual disease following treatment. Our wealth of experience in molecular diagnostics ensures expert results and interpretation from the laboratory and pathologist to aid the referring physician and pathologist in the appropriate diagnosis and clinical management of their patients.
Founded in 1986, the laboratory has 2 decades of experience in molecular diagnostics. From cancer to specific genotype and mutation detection, the laboratory performs over 2000 tests a year on DNA and RNA extracted from a wide variety of clinical specimens, including peripheral blood, bone marrow, fresh/frozen tissues, body fluids, and paraffin embedded tissue. Our tests range from specific disease-linked genotype detection, detection of gene rearrangement and Loss of Heterozygosity, to monitoring for molecular remission in specific leukemias.
The Diagnostic Molecular Pathology lab is composed of 4 full time employees with over 47 years of combined experience in molecular diagnostic testing including Southern and Northern blots, PCR, RT-PCR, Polyacrylamide and Agarose gel electrophoresis, Capillary Electrophoresis, solution hybridization, real-time PCR and sequencing. Our staff also has ample experience in Flow Cytometry including DNA ploidy analysis, leukemia/lymphoma immunophenotyping and T-cell subset analysis.
Currently the laboratory’s instrumentation includes two Qiagen BioRobot EZ1 automated nucleic acid purification systems, several ABI 9700 thermal cyclers, one ABI 7500 Real Time thermal cycler, an ABI 3100 Genetic Analyzer with GeneMapper Fragment analysis and Sequencing software, a Nanodrop ND-1000 UV-Scanning Spectrophotometer, a BioRad Gel-Doc 2000 Imaging system and a Coulter FC500 5-color Flow Cytometer.
