G.I. & Liver Pathology
The close interaction between our department of pathology and the Center for Liver Diseases at the University of Miami/Jackson Memorial Hospital has been of the outmost importance in maintaining the high quality of diagnosis and care for patients with any kind medical and neoplastic liver conditions. The pathologists examine specimens from patients prior to transplantation, and also look at the organs removed. All of this takes place at one of the largest centers in the world for liver and gastrointestinal (multivisceral) transplants.
Our pathologists evaluate biopsy tissues to determine the type of complications affecting the patients in the post-transplant stages. This service is in operation twenty-four hours a day, seven days a week, including holidays. Diagnoses are provided within the same day of receiving the specimen.
Our department also serves as a teaching tool for the hepatology fellows and international observers/visitors. Pathology plays a pivotal role in the interdepartmental conferences for liver biopsy, liver tumor board, transplantation, colorectal diseases, and pancreatoesophagogastric diseases.
There is a team of pathologists specialized in liver and gastrointestinal pathology at the University of Miami. All of them are certified by the American Board of Pathology in Anatomic and/or Clinical Pathology.
