The gynecologic pathology service at the University of Miami department of pathology provides clinical services to over 5000 patients annually. This service works in conjunction with the Division of Gynecologic Oncology, a pioneer in teaching, research and patients services in the field of gynecologic cancers. Over 500 women with gynecologic cancers are diagnosed and treated at our center annually. Our GYN pathologists collaborate with the gynecologic oncologists and with cytopathology laboratory to compound the clinical and cytological reports (PapTests, FNA,etc.) with the pathologic findings in patients with gynecologic cancers. A large number of complex and uncommon diagnostic entities are discussed in detail at our weekly multi-disciplinary GYN Tumor Board . In addition to the gynecologic pathologists the team includes Drs. Leo Twiggs, Joseph Lucci, (GYO), and Aaron Wolfson (radiation oncologist). The availability of a rapid tissue processing allows for diagnosis of gynecological biopsies within the day of procedure. Also routine use of immunohistochemistry on tissue and cytologic material facilitates a rapid and accurate diagnosis on complex gynecologic cancers, namely uterine and ovarian tumors.
