Cytopathology
Cytopathology laboratory at the University of Miami/Jackson Memorial Medical Center provides service to over 65,000 in-patients and more than 300,000 out- patient annually. At this laboratory we evaluate approximately 25,000 cytologic samples per year, of which 7,000 are non-gynecologic, including over 2,000 fine needle aspirations (FNA). Our services also cover patients at Sylvester Comprehensive Cancer Center, and Breast Health Center, where a stand -by evaluation of FNA for diagnosis of cancer is provided at the clinics and radiologic units. We are using liquid –based cytology for our cervicovaginal smears (Pap test) and immunocytochemistry for tumor markers on our FNA and body cavity fluid specimens (pleural , abdominal and cerebrospinal fluid), on a daily basis.
Our academic mission is to train residents and fellows. The Cytopathology Fellowship training program, established in 1992, has been active since and has trained over 20 cytopathologists who are now practicing at large community hospitals and academic medical centers in the US and overseas.
In addition to our routine patient work, we offer consultation services to the pathologists in the community and those in Latin American countries. These services are facilitated through our Client Services Department at (305) 585-5921 or (800) 445-3074.
The Cytopathology team includes 5 Board certified cytopathologists, 2 Cytopathology Fellows, 4 ASCP-certified cytotechnologists , two certified prep-laboratory technicians and two supporting staff . The cytopathology team is trained and prepared to answer any questions related to handling and preparation of the cytologic material (Tel: 305-585-6184) .The Cytopathology laboratory however, only accepts prepared cytologic slides from out side institutions for consultations. The cytologic findings on these consultation slides are verbally reported by our cytopathologists or the report is faxed to the primary institution on the same day or within 24 hours.
The team of pathologists are all specialized in Cytopathology and are certified by the American Board of Pathology in Anatomic and/or Clinical Pathology.
