Neuropathology

Three board-certified neuropathologists share clinical neuropathology duties at Jackson Memorial Hospital, the Miami Veteran's Administration Medical Center and the University of Miami Hospitals and Clinics and the Department of Pathology's consult service.  The yearly case load in surgical pathology includes approximately 400 biopsies or tumor resections, of which 40% have one or more frozen sections at the time of surgery.  Approximately 95% of all autopsies have brain and spinal cord examinations.  The yearly autopsies total around 300.  In addition, the Neuropathologists examine another 50 medical examiners' autopsy brains.

Neuropathology holds weekly brain cutting sessions in the Department of Pathology that are attended by pathology residents, pediatric pathology fellows and neurophysiologist trainees.  Neuropathology organizes and directs monthly Neurosurgical Biopsy Conferences in the Department of Neurosurgery and monthly Neurology Clinical-Pathological Presentations in the Department of Neurology.  Also, Neuropathology participates in bimonthly Neurooncology Tumor Board.

Neuropathology research endeavors include NIH-funded and VAMC-funded grants in experimental metabolic brain disease, neuroinflammatory disorders and Brain Banking.

There is a team of pathologists specialized in neuropathology at the University of Miami. All of them are certified by the American Board of Pathology in Anatomic and/or Clinical Pathology.
