Pediatric Pathology
The pediatric pathologists at the University of Miami, Miller School of Medicine are known by their expertise in diseases of the embryo, fetus, infants and children. They work in close relationship with pediatricians from several subspecialties available at the University (neonatologists, gastroenterologists, cardiologists, endocrinologists, neurologists, pulmonary diseases, pediatric critical care, pediatric surgeons, pediatric hematologists/oncologists, etc.). The pediatric pathologists also keep a close relationship with members of the maternal-fetal medicine division. There have been several Interdisciplinary Conferences for over 20 years including: Neonatal Mortality and Morbidity, Pediatric Critical Care M&M, Pediatric Grand Rounds, Pediatric Tumor Board, Pediatric M&M, Pediatric Gastroenterology, and Obstetrics-Pathology Conference.
There are a large number of pediatric surgical specimens at University of Miami/Jackson Memorial Hospital including spontaneous abortions, placentas, pediatric tumors and endoscopic biopsies among others. The service of pediatric solid organ transplant is extremely active in our institution; therefore the fellows and residents are exposed to a large number of explanted livers and multivisceral transplants.
The division of pediatric pathology performs over 100 fetal and pediatric autopsies per year. The autopsy may benefit family members because:
- Discovering inherited or familial diseases helps families to be screened and to prevent diseases to progress without treatment.
- Genetic counseling can be given to parents to allow them to weight the risk of recurrence for autosomal dominant and recessive conditions.
- Conditions such as maternal thrombophilias can now be treated and the future pregnancy outcome can improve.
- Confirming the cause of death will help the family to come to a closure.
- General knowledge gained by the autopsy may help to discover new treatment or to avoid some therapeutic measures with unwanted side effects.
There is a one-year ACGME accredited pediatric pathology fellowship program at Jackson Memorial Hospital. The fellow is responsible for participating in all pediatric frozen sections, reviewing all pediatric surgical cases prior to giving them to the pediatric pathologist on service. He/she performs all complicated pediatric autopsies and presents them at the several Interdisciplinary Conferences. The pediatric pathology fellow publishes scientific articles in peer-reviewed journals as part of his/her training and rotates for two weeks at the Cytogenetics Laboratory located at Mailman Center for Child Development, two blocks from the Department of Pathology.
The Department has a team of pathologists specialized in pediatric pathology at University of Miami. All of them are certified by the American Board of Pathology in Anatomic and/or Clinical Pathology:
