Surgical Pathology

The Division of Surgical Pathology at University of Miami Miller School of Medicine in affiliation with Jackson Memorial Hospital (JMH) handles approximately 30,000 surgicalspecimens per year. The specimens have a combination of complexity and variety because of our diverse population. We receive specimens from all over the world because of the expertise of the pathologists and other physicians working in the Medical Center that attract patients with complicated diseases.

Since the implementation of the Rapid Tissue Processing (RTP) system, more than 80% of the cases are diagnosed by the pathologists on the same day that they are received in the Histology Laboratory. This system has two other advantages: does not use formalin that can be toxic and preserves tissue RNA and proteins for possible molecular studies using paraffin blocks.

The Division of Surgical Pathology at University of Miami Miller School of Medicine counts with 19 surgical pathologists, all certified by the American Board of Pathology in Anatomic and/or Clinical Pathology and many have additional expertise in subspecialty areas of anatomic pathology.
