Transfusion Medicine

Transfusion Medicine Service is amongst the most active hospital-based transfusion services in the country supporting the blood needs of patients at JMH which include a level-1 trauma center, an active solid organ transplantation program (liver, heart, lung, renal, intestinal, pancreas and multi-visceral transplantation), and an adult and pediatric hematology-oncology program, including a hematopoietic progenitor cell transplant program. Over 65,000 units of blood and components are provided annually to hospital patients.

Transfusion Medicine Service encompasses the full range of transfusion medicine activities including: immunohematology, hematopoietic progenitor cell collection, processing, and cryopreservation, and therapeutic apheresis.  Clinical consultation on various aspects of transfusion medicine/blood banking are provided to the clinical departments on an around the clock basis.

Transfusion Medicine Service is accredited by the American Association of Blood Banks (AABB) and College of American Pathologists (CAP). Hematopoietic Progenitor Cell Collection/Cryopreservation Facilities are also accredited by the Foundation for Accreditation of Cellular Therapy (FACT) and ensure compliance with FDA current good tissue practice.

The Director is board certified in Anatomic Pathology, Clinical Pathology and  Blood Banking/Transfusion Medicine.  There is also a team of pathologists specialized in clinical Pathology and certified by the American Board of Pathology.
