About Us

The Department of Pathology is a large clinical department, dedicated to the mission of making important contributions to education, patient care and research in the specialty of laboratory medicine.  Through excellence in professional and technical performance, it is able to bring about innovative improvements and support new approaches to a variety of service and educational programs, as well as open new frontiers to research and development.  The Department’s annual budget approximates $15 million and supports over 80 full-time and part-time staff, as well as 43 full-time and 50 voluntary faculty members.

The practice activity includes professional, technical and global pathology and laboratory medicine services provided at the four major hospitals within the Medical Center Complex (Jackson Memorial Hospital, University of Miami Hospital and Clinics/Sylvester Cancer Center, Anne Bates Leach Eye Hospital, Veterans Administration Medical Center and for the outlying health service locations of the Jackson Health System and UMMG.

The Department also operates Pathology Specialty Services (PSS), an independently licensed and CLIA certified reference laboratory which provides esoteric laboratory and Pathology consultative services for hospitals, physicians, veterinarians, and other laboratories in the South Florida area, the Caribbean and across the United States.
