Medical Student Eligibility

Eligibility

The University of Miami Miller School of Medicine/Jackson Memorial Hospital provides clinical externships (electives) for students enrolled in medical schools accredited by the Liaison Committee on Medical Education (LCME).  However, medical students enrolled at the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine are given first priority for all rotations at UMMSM.  Students enrolled at other LCME accredited medical schools may participate in electives only if space is available.  Only students who are in good academic standing at their own medical school will be accepted.

International students and students enrolled in foreign medical schools are accepted into our program but no grades or written evaluations of their performance will be issued.    

Application Process

Students from University of Miami Miller School of Medicine choosing to take this elective should contact Ms. Italia Smith, Office of Student Affairs at (305) 243-7418.

Students from outside universities qualifying for the Pathology Elective at the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine, Department of Pathology should submit a completed application and required supporting documents listed below to Ms. Yanira Blanco at yblanco3@med.miami.edu

Required documents:

  • Completed student rotation application
  • Letter of good standing from current medical school 
  • Proof of adequate insurance coverage; both health and liability (malpractice)
  • Original HIPPA Certificate, signed by student only

(All students are required to complete the HIPPA training certification forms on-line).  The HIPPA training content is available at: http://www.mededu.miami.edu/MedEd

  7. Take the course: Basics of Being Secure Part 2
  8. The student should print the certification form, check the appropriate boxes, sign and date.
